The New Born Year: Excerpt

Alison Jennings hit the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge going seventy-five and banging on her steering wheel. Seven thirty in the morning, the day after Christmas, and she was supposed to be getting ready to go to Astro’s mother’s house for their traditional Christmas breakfast. (Because everyone had different obligations on Christmas day, she’d told Ally at Thanksgiving, so it was just easier if she had it the next day. She’d grinned and added, “Plus, then you can just put your leftovers on fresh plates.”) But Astro had this funny look on his face when she’d come back from her shower. Which

Origin Stories: The New Born Year

There may be spoilers. Probably not so much, but maybe. The New Born Year was my reward for surviving my first year of publishing. I looked forward to writing this for about four months while I wrote the entire Home Series and Red and Bad (Serial One). It's still one of my favorite things I've written in the last few years. The inspiration for this book was Winterfair Gifts by Lois McMaster Bujold. Winterfair Gifts comes after a long line of books in the Vorkosigan Saga and jumps POV to a relatively minor character. (Roic, who is a much larger character now, but at the

Happy Release Day, The New Born Year!

There are so many things I want to say about this book, and how much I love it. This is not the kind of love that can be damaged by pointing out its flaws, or discovering new typos. I'm not sure what could damage my love for TNBY, but it'd have to be drastic. Really. I adore it. I hope you do, too. The town in this book is based on an actual town. If you call it out in comments, here on the blog or on Facebook, I will send you an ebook copy of one book, your choice,

Reflections and Updates

My sincere thanks to recent commenter VC, whose comments reminded me I, y'know, have a blog. Don't get me wrong, I love blogging. Adore it. I've been writing on the web since before the word "blog" existed, and then I fought against it for years (coded my own sites with the HTML, thank you, just when stylesheets were hitting the scene). I don't self-censor as much, and I believe in reflection. The fiction I write is reflective, though sometimes I don't see the traces of myself in it until years later. Case in point. The New Born Year is shaping up
